Urologists are medical doctors who have specialised in conditions involving the male and female urinary tract (that’s the system that filters fluids through the kidneys into the bladder and then through the urethra out of the body). They also specialise in the male reproductive system, so they are about the closest equivalent to a “men’s health specialist” that you get. Urologists use surgery and medications to treat conditions affecting the kidneys, the bladder and the male reproductive system. They will often work closely with other specialists when treating certain conditions. For example, they often team up with oncologists who are cancer specialists when treating prostate cancer. If a general practitioner, nurse or primary healthcare practitioner suspects that a man has prostate cancer, they will normally refer him to a urologist for further investigation.

Nuclear medicine physicians are medical doctors who specialise in using radioactive materials, such as radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals. They conduct a variety of diagnostic imaging procedures that involve radioactive materials. These procedures can help to identify areas within the body where prostate cancer may have spread to. They also use radioactive materials called radioisotopes to destroy prostate cancer when it has spread to different parts of the body.

GENETIC COUNSELLORS

Genetic counsellors are healthcare practitioners who are trained in the field of genetics.

Men who may have an increased risk for prostate cancer due to a strong family history of prostate or other cancers like breast, ovarian, bowel, pancreatic and endometrial, may benefit from seeing a genetic counsellor. The genetic counsellor will evaluate the man’s personal and family health history to assess his risk for inherited cancers and to advise on the appropriate genetic testing to identify the causative genetic mutation. If they are found to carry a genetic mutation it may influence the age at which they should start prostate cancer screening to ensure early detection.

In men with newly diagnosed localised prostate cancer, genetic testing can help to identify a genetic mutation which places them at risk of a more aggressive type of cancer. This may influence their treatment choice. Testing will also help to determine the risk for other cancers and the best strategy to prevent these or to screen for these.

Genetic counselling and testing are also important for men who have been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. If certain types of genetic mutations are identified, they may benefit from targeted therapies with medications such as PARP inhibitors.

Genetic counsellors can also give advice on whether family members of men with prostate cancer causative genetic mutations will benefit from genetic testing to determine their risk for prostate and other gene-associated cancers (for example colon, breast, melanoma or pancreatic). This may influence the age at which they should be screened for various cancers and help with preventative strategies.
