A diagnosis of prostate cancer can be scary and it’s good to know that you’re not alone. Talking to other men who have been down the same road can be useful for some men and their partners. Our support group is run via email which allows members throughout South Africa to participate.
If you feel that you would like connect with other men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and then you are welcome to join this e-mail support group. We include men who have been diagnosed at all stages of the disease. Some men are still considering which treatment option may be best for them and wish to communicate with men who have undergone different treatment options. Other men are battling with the side effects from treatment and are looking for support from men who have also experienced these. In this sense it is a closed Group, but spouses/partners are welcome to contribute.
The purpose of this support group is not to replace the advice from your doctor or other healthcare professionals. We are here to:
Seek and offer support
Ask questions
Share information
Share personal stories and experiences of prostate cancer
There are some basic house rules that are necessary to ensure the smooth running of the group and to ensure the protection of the members, the healthcare professionals who treat you and the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
By joining the group you agree to abide by these rules.
Firstly, the views expressed in the support group do not necessarily reflect those of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, those of your doctor or other healthcare professionals involved in your treatment. Your use of this support group is at your own risk, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation cannot be held responsible for the contents of any e-mails on the group. One of our patient affairs board members will be appointed as the moderator of the group, but their purpose is not to provide medical advice or information. However, they will do their best to make sure that everything runs smoothly, so if you have any issues, e-mail them directly. They are also allowed to remove members from the group if they do not abide by the rules. From time-to-time they will also send out information about Prostate Cancer Foundation events activities and projects.
When you first join the group, you can introduce yourself and tell people a bit about your occupation. It’s also the one opportunity you get to provide a brief overview of your business. Other than that, no advertising is allowed.
Negative Feedback
This support group consists of patients who have been treated by different healthcare professionals and who have undergone different treatment modalities. Whilst your treatment outcome may be disappointing for you, other men may have had a positive experience with the treatment. All treatment options have their advantages and disadvantages, and it is therefore not appropriate to use this forum to either discourage or encourage men to make a choice for a particular treatment. You are welcome to explain why you chose a particular treatment option, but it is not the forum to advise men as to what treatment option they should select. Please do not name any healthcare professionals or hospitals when making negative comments.
Protection of personal information
We ask that members do not share the personal information provided by fellow members, with any third parties. However, we do not have control over this and cannot therefore guarantee that your information will not be passed on to other parties.
Sharing links and information
Please don’t include links in your e-mail to any material that could be considered unlawful, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, pornographic or racially offensive.
Members may share links about alternative treatment options, but all members should be aware that these may contain information that is not necessarily scientific accurate. You may also share your personal anecdotal experiences with a particular diet or with traditional, herbal or alternative medications, however we will not allow members to advocate using any alternative therapy in place of a scientifically validated medical treatment. This is because cancer is a serious disease and before treatments can be prescribed by healthcare professionals they have to be scientifically evaluated through a rigorous process of clinical trials. Making claims about a particular treatment that has not been through this process can create false hope and can be potentially dangerous.
From time-to-time a representative from the Prostate Cancer Foundation may comment on posts and provide information from scientifically validated sources.
Please note that by requesting to join the support group you agree to abide by the terms and conditions above.
